Welcome back to our Q&A series on product samples. Did you catch part 1?
It was with InTouch Services Ltd’s John Niggl, who gave us this nugget: “This [product sample] leaves you with much more reliable insight to qualify a supplier before paying a deposit and placing an order with them.”
For this installment, we are joined via video by Shanghai-based Gary Huang, founder of 80/20 Sourcing, which helps small business importers source from China quickly and efficiently.
Gary described buying product samples as “getting a preview of [the] coming attraction”. Comparing the process to bringing in an actor for an audition, Gary said purchasing samples gives the buyer an initial look not only at product quality, but also the supplier’s soft skills such as communication and attention to detail.
When asked about his key takeaway from a rookie mistake he made when he first started, Gary shared this: “If you don’t have that trust built up yet, definitely don’t give them the secret sauce.”
