Releases offer more exercises yet remain easy to store. Many have self-generating power systems.
Various technologies are finding their way into China-made cardiovascular fitness equipment as suppliers strive to expand market reach. Besides the EU and North America, which are currently the line’s main destinations, companies are eyeing opportunities in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South America and non-EU European countries.
In line with export targets, many enterprises are combining the functions of two or more machines in one unit. The most popular of these products are elliptical bikes, which are a cross between elliptical trainers and upright exercise bikes.
Models offering both cardio and strength workouts are also increasing. A number of treadmills, for instance, come with attachments that allow sit-ups and waist trimming exercises. Dumbbells are incorporated in several designs as well.
A few machines provide additional health benefits. These include treadmills that emit negative ions, which improve air quality.
Even as they are incorporating more functions, manufacturers are keeping models compact and portable to ensure storage convenience. Many designs, especially those meant for the residential segment, can now either be folded or rolled to save space.
For example, the model RB100 recumbent exercise bike from Shanghai Soin Industry Co. Ltd can be adjusted from 1,420x360x750mm to 400x400x600mm. Wheels at the bottom and a pull rod make the product easy to move.
Anhui Wor-Biz. Trading Co. Ltd, meanwhile, offers exercise bikes that can be tucked away via transport rollers.
Following the “green” trend, several suppliers are also releasing fitness equipment that can operate on self-generated power. Such machines convert the energy produced by the user’s physical action into electricity, which supports electronic functions.
Besides being environment-friendly, these designs can be positioned where convenient since they do not need to be near an AC outlet. Models are generally priced at least 50 percent more than conventional motorized versions.
Beijing Body Strong Fitness Co. Ltd offers a self-generating power system with its FT-6806 elliptical. Priced at $900, the equipment can accommodate users weighing up to 150kg. It has 16 resistance levels and six preset programs.
On top of product upgrades, manufacturers are putting more emphasis on their ODM and OBM businesses to boost competitiveness.
In line with this, many companies have increased their R&D investment by1 to 2 percent in the past three years. A number, Shanghai Soin included, now hold national and international patents.
Treadmills and exercise bikes account for roughly 70 percent of cardiovascular fitness equipment produced in China. Elliptical trainers are popular as well.
Models have frames made of domestically sourced 1.5 to 5mm-thick steel tubes. For plastic parts, most employ ABS, although EVA foam is often adopted in handrails.
Overseas-bound units are manufactured to TÜV, CE, GS, EMC, EN 957 and RoHS requirements. About 60 percent of exports consist of machines for the residential segment.
Prices depend on the raw material specifications, unit dimensions and the complexity of integrated functions. Quotes for China-made cardiovascular exercise machines are expected to climb 5 to 10 percent in coming months amid the rising cost of manufacturing inputs, especially steel.
Treadmills: Popular for their versatility and convenience, treadmills are currently available starting at $100 per unit. Designs generally have LED displays that provide feedback on workouts, and most offer several training programs.
Speed settings typically reach 12kph, although there are some with an 18kph option. Incline can usually be adjusted from 0 to 15, 18 or 20 percent.
Entry-level types for the residential segment do not exceed $500. Adopting 1.5 to 1.8mm-thick steel tubes, these can accommodate users weighing a maximum of 150kg. Fewer than 10 exercise routines are configured in their control systems.
At higher price ranges, the selection includes machinesfor commercial settings. Such products provide more workout information and programs. In addition, these are often equipped with add-ons such as an MP3 player dock, reading rack, game console and radio. The LED display tracks workout progress while doubling as a TV.
Better-cushioned running belts that absorb impact to the joints are notable in upscale releases.
A backward walking function can be seen in a handful of models. Smaller exercise machines or fitness accessories such as waist trimmers and massage belts are also integrated into a number of units.
Exercise bikes & ellipticals: In the first category, the selection consists of upright and recumbent cycles. Prices range from $30 to $700 or higher.
Many come with magnetic or electromagnetic resistance systems. Models employing the former are typically designed for the residential segment. Most electromagnetic types, on the other hand, are meant for experienced users or commercial establishments. Several bikes offer programs simulating different cycling environments.
Suitable for upper and lower body training, ellipticals are priced between $50 and $900 each. Models have a stride length of 16 to 19in, and most offer various resistance settings. Workout progress can be monitored via an LCD or LED console.
Similar to treadmills, a number of exercise bikes and ellipticals also come with entertainment devices and fitness accessories. In addition, upscale products are often fitted with high-speed circulation fans, and adjustable seats and backrests.
