About 4,000 suppliers offer locks and other metal products for home appliances and power tools.
Xiaolan in the northwestern part of Zhongshan city in China's Guangdong province is among the country’s major manufacturing hubs for different metal products. The area hosts about 4,000 suppliers that roll out locks and products for home appliances, power tools and other items. It was named in 1986 as the Southern Lock City because of its robust metal locks industry.
Suppliers in Xiaolan cater to both the domestic and overseas markets, with the top destinations for the latter including Europe, Southeast Asia and America. Vantage, Evergreen, Black & Decker and Colliers are a few of these companies’ top clients.
In 2011, the town’s output of metal products exceeded $3 billion. This represented more than 5 percent of the national total and 40 percent of Xiaolan’s aggregate production for that year.
To provide assistance to businesses, the local government and private institutions have established service centers within the area. The Xiaolan Productivity Promotion Center, for instance, helps companies apply for inspection certificates and reports that are recognized worldwide.
Meanwhile, the government of Zhongshan encourages research and design by setting up national-level research centers and specialized industrial regions.
For example, the Zhongshan National Torch High-Tech Industrial Development Zone was established in 1990 by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the governments of Guangdong province and Zhongshan.
Zhongshan Port, which ranks among the top 10 ports nationwide in terms of container-handling capacity, is in the zone.
Zhongshan, historically known as Xiangshan, is a prefecture-level city in the south of the Pearl River Delta region.
It is located along the west side of the mouth of the Pearl River Delta, directly opposite Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The area, Dongguan, Nanhai and Shunde are called the Four Little Tigers of Guangdong.
