The second installment of this two-part series highlights the efforts of Wenzhou suppliers to deliver on-trend units.
Massage equipment makers in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, are strengthening their capability to deliver high-performance models that are both ergonomic and visually appealing. They are beefing up allocations for market research and product development in a bid to expand and update selections.
A part of the bigger budget goes into hiring top-notch technical personnel. Many suppliers are offering greater-than-average salaries to attract competent senior engineers.
The establishment of product testing facilities is also a priority as standards become more stringent. In 2006, Zhejiang Haozhonghao Health Product Co. Ltd invested more than $1 million to construct a laboratory that conforms to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 and ISO 10012:2003. The lab houses six testing rooms, including one each for measuring length, performance and durability, electrical safety and user comfort.
The facility has been recognized as a provincial-level enterprise laboratory by the Zhejiang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau in 2010. That same year, it was accredited by Underwriters Laboratories Inc., allowing the company an opportunity to improve its testing methodologies, reduce certification costs and shorten product certification period.
In addition, a few suppliers are cooperating with academic institutions in China and abroad to develop new technologies. Zhejiang Haozhonghao, for instance, has worked with Harvard University, the Yangtze Delta Region Institute of Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University on airbag and body detection systems.
