Part one of this three-part series discusses the factors that nourish the city’s camping gear makers.
Bouyed by geographical and logistical advantages, Ningbo continues its reign as a key production center of camping gear in mainland China. Up to 40 percent of Zhejiang province’s supply of camping lanterns, tents, sleeping bags and furniture come from the city. In the 10-month period ending October 2011, shipments from the area amounted to $947.5 million, accounting for 26 percent of the mainland’s aggregate.
One of the factors sustaining Ningbo’s position in the industry is its proximity to important seaports in the Asia-Pacific region. Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Singapore, Pusan and Osaka are all within 1,000 nautical miles from the Port of Ningbo.
Inland, the city’s strong transportation infrastructure expands its supply network. Expressways, for instance, connect Ningbo to Hangzhou, Taizhou, Wenzhou, Jinhua and Shanghai.
The camping gear sector encompasses more than 2,000 companies. Privately owned enterprises account for 75 percent of the supplier base, while foreign-invested and joint-venture entities make up 20 percent. The rest consists of state-owned operations.
Manufacturers usually offer one or two camping products, and related lines. Lighting-oriented companies, for example, often carry flashlights and lanterns. Makers of camping tents and furniture typically provide other outdoor gear as well.
