Adoption of IR LED arrays, laser gathers pace

IR laser-based cameras target the high end for ultralong-distance applications.

  • Broader light source options: IR LED and IR LED array are the common choices, but the latter is gaining popularity owed to its greater luminous efficacy, better condenser performance and longer life span. It also simplifies product design as one or two IR LED arrays can deliver an illumination range of up to 100m. A third alternative, IR laser, targets the high end. It extends the operating range to 200m.
  • CCD sensors remain popular: Mainstream models generally adopt CCDs with 420 to 540 TVL. Makers developing megapixel units for the high end use 1.3 to 3MP CCD or CMOS, mostly from Sony, OmniVision or Aptina. Many are turning to Sony’s Effio platform, which can deliver 700 TVL for improved imaging performance.
