Glass tableware suppliers shift to better inputs, procedures

Dinnerware and drinkware manufacturers are using tempered and borosilicate glass, and advanced pressing machines.

Makers of glass tableware in China are improving material selection and streamlining production processes as they move upmarket.

The model MCF029 wineglass from Xi’an Moffon has handpainted designs.

With regard to the former, more companies are favoring tempered glass, which renders models durable and scratch-resistant. The strength of dinnerware using the input is said to be five or six times greater than regular designs. As such, releases can withstand temperatures as high as 350 C, and rapid heating and cooling at 180 C.

In addition, products shatter into very small fragments when broken, lessening the risk of injury.

Several drinkware suppliers are turning to borosilicate glass as well. Containing 7 to 13 percent B₂O₃, the material boasts high resistance to thermal shock and chemical corrosion.

In terms of manufacturing, many of the latest releases are handblown. This technique eliminates joining lines left after pattern application, which are often present in machine-made pieces.

For increased toughness, items undergo heating and cooling to relieve internal stress.

Production facilities are being upgraded as well. Electric furnaces, for instance, are replacing traditional coal kilns for better temperature regulation. This has resulted in the creation of models with clearer surfaces, and fewer bubble formations and other imperfections.

Companies are also utilizing advanced pressing machines, which render glass seamless.

In enhancing visual appeal, suppliers are launching designs in contemporary styles to match modern table settings. Various detailing methods, including gilding, engraving, silk-screening, handpainting, etching and decal printing, are employed to boost product differentiation.

To ensure safety, most companies submit samples to SGS, BV and Intertek for third-party testing.

The majority of glass tableware from China complies with FDA requirements and California Proposition 65 of the US, and Europe's EEC standards.

China's selection of glass dinnerware includes plates, serving and soup bowls, and drinking vessels. These are offered individually or in sets of two to more than 10 pieces. The type and quantity of models can be buyer-specified.

Products are often handcrafted and come in different shapes, sizes and motifs.

While transparent designs continue to dominate exports in the line, output of colored versions is currently increasing.

Such dinnerware is priced 5 to 30 percent higher than clear equivalents. Pieces in red are the most expensive as they contain pigment from a rare metal often sourced from Japan and Germany. Yellow and orange follow next.

Depending on the material, size and manufacturing procedure, quotes of China-made dinnerware start at $0.35 and can exceed $1.50.

Low-end releases are often machine-pressed and have a thickness of 3mm. They are transparent and come with minimal embellishments. Prices are between $0.35 and $0.60.

Usually machine-pressed or handblown, midrange models go for $0.70 to $1. Products utilize inputs that are 4 to 5mm-thick. For improved aesthetics, items boast a frosted or bubble finish, and can have decaled or engraved patterns.

Designs for high-end dinnerware, meanwhile, can be gilded, engraved, embossed or handpainted. These have a thickness of 5 to 8mm, and are scratch-resistant, and microwave- and dishwasher-safe. Some models are made of tempered glass. Prices exceed $1.50.

Glass drinkware

Similar to dinnerware, transparent pieces dominate China's overseas shipments of glass drinkware.

Models are either handblown or machine-pressed, with versions crafted under the former method quoted 50 to 60 percent higher.

Apart from the production technique, the material, size and pattern application are the key price differentiators.

Standard low-end releases utilize soda-lime glass and are often machine-pressed. They have 1 to 1.5mm-thick walls and mouths that measure 80 to 90mm in diameter. The height is between 100 and 150mm. Models come in simple designs. The quotes are $0.30 to $0.60.

Typically made of the same materials as less expensive pieces, midrange drinkware can be machine-pressed or handblown with a wall thickness of 2mm. Most designs have decaled motifs and a frosted or bubble finish. These go for $0.70 to $1.

Upscale versions start at $1.50 and top $4. Such products adopt handblown soda-lime, lead, borosilicate or tempered glass. A number of releases boast gilded, engraved or embossed patterns, while some use imported pigment for coloring.

The majority of high-end drinkware is scratch-resistant, and microwave- and dishwasher-safe.

As regards stemware, traditional round wineglasses continue to dominate exports. Models in novelty contours such as inverted cone and hourglass with colorful patterns, however, are gaining ground.

Mainstream pieces have a capacity of 200 to 400mL, and weigh between 200 and 400g. They stand 150 to 260mm tall and boast walls that are 1.5 to 2mm-thick.

Many of the latest releases come in leaf, floral, fruit and star motifs. The most expensive items feature handpainted designs.

Prices of China-made stemware range from $0.50 to $2.
