Makers intensify competitiveness by widening selections and matching current trends.
Suppliers of cardboard gift boxes in China are adopting diverse materials and product constructions to keep designs interesting and fresh. Among the popular inputs utilized in the latest releases are art and copperplate paper. Both types yield a high degree of whiteness and evenly structured fibers, resulting in consistent thickness, less shrinkage and good elasticity. They also repel water but absorb ink well during printing. Single- and double-face, and matte variants are available.

Models covered in 128 to 157g fine art paper have between 800 and 1,500g grayboard backing for reinforcement. A film layer may be added to the surface of the former input for stronger protection against scratches and fading. Makers also employ glossy and matte lamination, UV curing, gold and silver hot-stamping, embossing and die cutting.
Specialized and functional materials are likewise adopted on the boxes’ exteriors. Examples are embossing and fluting paper. Ribbons, velvet and satin fabrics, sponges and EVA foam are utilized for decoration.
Suppliers offer designs made of white and brown kraft paper, and white card- and paperboard. Buyers’ specifications are accepted as well.
Products in the line are available in diverse structures. Some models may have detachable lids. These are less expensive to manufacture and simpler to put together than KD pieces but take up more room, incurring higher shipping costs. To maximize space, sets containing items in progressing sizes so that smaller versions can fit in larger counterparts are available from companies.
China suppliers offer a selection of cardboard gift boxes in various constructions and designs. A typical 60x60x60mm model can go for as low as $0.10 and exceed $1 depending on the size, structure and material.
A version without an outer protective film and made of single-layer 100 to 200g cardboard is priced between $0.10 and $0.15. It can be printed in a basic color.
Listing at $0.20 to $0.45, the midrange alternative is composed of two or three layers of cardboard, at least one of which tops 200g, yielding stronger walls. The exterior is protected with film for water resistance. Most pieces in this category come in boxes with multicolor patterns.
High-end variants start at $0.50 and may exceed $1. These use materials similar to midrange counterparts but adopt a more complex design and construction. For instance, a transparent window on the cover or one of the sides can be added. Velvet, EVA foam, silk or other soft inputs line the interior.
China suppliers of cardboard gift boxes expect markups of 10 percent or higher in the next six months. Ningbo Wonbon Paper Product Co. Ltd even predicts an increase of about 16 percent.
The projected adjustments are due to swelling material, labor and shipment costs, and the yuan’s appreciation against foreign currencies.
The rates of paper and wood pulp have been rising continuously since the start of 2010. At the beginning of this year, the country’s outlay for the former material reached its highest in a decade. This is influenced by world market conditions because makers import an average of 10 million tons or 70 percent of their total consumption of the input every year.
Meanwhile, labor spending climbed between 10 and 20 percent in recent months. Companies had to raise employees’ salaries to compensate for the swelling inflation.
Surging oil prices are likewise pushing up product quotes as shipping expenses rise.
The strengthening of the yuan exacerbates the situation for suppliers. The currency is expected to gain another 6 percent in value in the months ahead.
