Book cover makers emphasize better appearance

The latest releases boast multiprismatic effects and various finishes.

Aesthetic improvements constitute the main R&D trend in China’s book covers industry. These boost product differentiation in the relatively homogenous line.

This model from Wenzhou Defoile can be made of PP and PVC.

For enhanced visual appeal, many companies are widening material selection. Choices now include plastic sheets with a multiprismatic effect. They raise final prices by 10 percent over regular types.

At Fugang Printing & Stationery Co. Ltd, the attractiveness of the look was tempered by the inherent toxic property of PVC. In response, the maker purchased an extrusion machine intended for sheets in the input and modified it to allow output of multiprismatic PP, which is safer.

PU leather boasting color-changing embossed patterns is another material option. Processing, however, was traditionally limited to one run per A4 size. This necessitated two runs for each book cover.

Last year, Ever Shining Stationery Co. Ltd developed a method of embossing in A3, resulting in simultaneous application for front and back A4 parts.

To improve appearance further, companies are expanding the available surface treatment options.

Solid-color and transparent types are common, while embossing and color printing can be done for custom orders. At Wenzhou Defoile Packing Manufacturer, motifs in the former include grid, star, flower, line, orange peel and animal skin. The supplier recently released a national flag series.

Ever Shining upgraded processing systems for PU leather in 2010. This removes the chance of horizontal striping typical after inkjet application, and makes colors richer and brighter. Models in top-grade handcarved leather are also offered.

Book covers range

The majority of China book covers are made of plastic, fabric and leather, in ascending order costwise. Companies are often material suppliers that have expanded their selection to finished pieces.

Of these inputs, the first is the most common because of its balance of low outlay and desirable physical characteristics. PVC has inherently higher toxicity than PP but boasts superior rigidity. PET is tougher, stiffer and more heat-resistant than PVC. EVA is elastic and soft.

The background of PP and PVC sheets can bear solid colors, or transparent or reflective effects. Such materials dominate industry usage.

For fabric, the nonwoven, polyester and nylon types are preponderant. The last is usually combined with spandex. Makers offer other small products, including aprons and oven mitts, in the same input.

Among Shaoxing Dream Louland Textile & Garment Co. Ltd’s book covers, nonwoven fleece pieces are priced 30 percent lower than those in polyester-spandex. The latter are 20 percent less expensive than releases in nylon-spandex combinations.

Silk-screening and heat-transfer printing are popular design-imparting steps for fabric versions. The second method raises quotes by 60 percent over silk-screening. Embroidery is employed in high-end items and causes them to bear an 80 percent premium compared with unprinted types.

Leather models come in synthetic and genuine variants. The first includes PU and PVC derivatives. Regardless of material, the majority of book covers from China are offered in A5 and A4.

Wenzhou Defoile also makes pieces for passports, while Dongguan Raiser Packing Products Co. Ltd manufactures album types.

In an effort to raise functionality, many companies are fitting releases with insert pockets. Versions intended for business cards are popular.
