While established chef coats styles prevail, models gain vitality through simple design changes.
China manufacturers of chef uniforms are directing product improvement efforts toward modernizing releases without sacrificing much of their traditional look and performance.
Chef jackets typically come in a double-breasted construction so that if the front gets stained, the cook can reverse the flaps and expose the unsoiled side. They adopt knotted fabric buttons able to bear frequent washing, constant impact and extreme heat. White is the prevalent color as it denotes cleanliness.
While the usual design is retained, many factories have started using plastic and metal sew-through and shank fasteners. Several are textile-covered. The closures are commonly in the same shade as the garment, although a few companies create contrast by employing variants in a different hue.
Factories are also turning out light pink and green chef coats. Targeted at females, such products boast added visual appeal while maintaining a fresh and neat look. Black, and dark tones of gray, brown, green and blue are gaining ground because they are able to camouflage minor stains.
Some white models are fitted with black, red or golden yellow piping for enhanced aesthetics. Small logos or motifs may be printed or embroidered on the chest or sleeves.
The latest chef uniforms highlight improved features as many are chemically treated to be moisture-absorbent, anti-bacterial, and oil- and odor-resistant. A number of designs are even flame-retardant.
Chef jackets from China mostly have long sleeves and turned-back cuffs, but the length is often customizable. They incorporate a stand-up collar and can be fitted with a single chest pocket.
The line is typically a secondary category for the majority of the country's workwear suppliers, representing only 30 percent of exports. Men's styles comprise almost 80 percent of the total outbound shipments.
Prices range from $4 to $10 per piece. The kind of textile used is the main quote determinant.
Factories commonly adopt cotton or cotton-polyester. The latter may have a composition of 77:23, 65:35 or 60:40. The materials are between 150 and 250gsm, with yarn counts and densities of 21 to 42s and 20x16 to 120x60, respectively.
Textiles boasting higher thickness values are generally more durable and resistant to fading and pilling. Most are made by large upstream providers utilizing advanced equipment and techniques. Such variants, therefore, are costlier and bring up prices when employed in releases.
Finishing treatments also influence quotes. Apart from functional coatings, some inputs undergo brushing to be more comfortable to the skin. The material's strength, however, may decrease due to the procedure.
Piping, embroidery, prints and closure types are other determinants, but their effect on the prices of chef coats is minimal.
