Makers add value with G-sensor, motion and radar detection, WDR, day/night operation and overspeeding alert.
- HD recording: Mainstream products feature 720p recording, with upscale models capable of 1080p. This results from the influx of more cost-effective SoCs with simpler circuit designs, which has reduced prices to $30 to $50 per unit, lower than quotes for VGA types in 2012. Variants with VGA resolution are now mainly for the entry-level sector. Chipsets such as Novatek’s NT96650, Sunplus’ SPCA1628 and AIT’s 8427are gaining ground in the high end, expanding selections once dominated by Ambarella platform and speeding up the move to 1080p.
- Compact, diverse designs: Matchbox and rearview mirror configurations are on the rise in line with slim and discreet styles. More units come with easy-to-install and -remove brackets. Rotatable and dual-camera options are likewise available.
- Adding value: G-sensor and motion detection are widely supported. More makers are also incorporating WDR, day/night mode auto switch, overspeeding warning and speed radar detector. Many can provide GPS features on request. Some suppliers are developing traffic sign recognition with alerts. Built-in LED illumination is declining in popularity due to its low practical value.
