Intel-based models lead robust touchscreen all-in-one PCs sector

Quadcore units with multipoint touchscreens will pick up speed in coming months.

  • Raising computing power: Makers are enhancing performance and configuration for better reliability. Most models run on Intel Core i3, i5 and i7, and Arm Cortex-A8 and A9. Intel processors are dominant, with the first two common among low-end PCs and the third found in advanced units. Dual-core CPUs are popular, but quadcore options will gain ground in coming months. The typical frequency range is 1.2 to 2GHz, and 3.1GHz is the maximum. The mainstream RAM is 1 or 2GB DDR2 or DDR3. For the HDD, companies use 2.5in SATA II or III with 250 to 500GB capacity. SSDs are limited to the high end.
  • Broader screen options: Suppliers can customize the touchscreen. In general, 15 to 22in displays use resistive or capacitive technology, with multipoint touch mainstay. Units larger than 22in adopt IR or SAW touchscreens with single- or multipoint touch capability. Entry-level and midrange screens are sourced from local and Taiwan providers, while those for upscale PCs are from Japan, South Korea and the U.S. Companies are looking to release more water-, vandal- and dust-resistant designs.
  • OS & features: Windows remains the top choice, followed by Linux. Some PCs adopt Android. Built-in speakers and a DVD-RW drive are standard, as are LAN, serial, parallel, USB 2.0, PS/2, audio output, VGA and HDMI ports, earphone jacks and SD slots. The add-ons include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, camera, 3G, digital TV and USB OTG.
