Touchscreens, faster CPUs bolster netbooks line

Recent releases also pack larger storage capacity and 3G, and provide longer operation time. Android OS is gaining popularity.

  • Touchscreens becoming widespread: Screens measuring 7in and delivering 800x480 pixels dominate the low end, although 10in WSVGA variants are also available. Some models use larger 11 or 12in displays, or adopt capacitive touchscreens. LED-backlit panels are likewise gaining traction.
  • Faster CPUs: In line with the trend for faster but low-power processors, more advanced units from China use the dual-core Intel Atom N2600 and D2500.
  • OS: Android is increasingly employed in entry-level models, with most using 2.2 or 2.3. Some releases run on Windows CE, and newer midrange variants on Windows 7. Windows XP and Linux are other options.
  • Add-ons: More releases combine a webcam, speakers and a microphone. Many support 3G or Bluetooth.
