Simple designs, stronger textiles dominate baby and children's pants line

Makers focus on minimalist pairs in heavier materials to ease cost concerns.

  • Minimal embellishment: Small prints and embroidery remain the popular decoration as makers employ fewer trimmings to keep quotes down. Intricate adornments such as patchwork, rivets, iron-ons and handmade designs are often limited to high-end releases amid greater buyer price sensitivity in some markets.
  • Heavier fabrics: Cotton is still the input of choice among most suppliers because of its softness and breathability. To create more durable pairs, companies are using denser textiles. The minimum weight is increased from 160 to 180gsm, with 200 to 320gsm fabrics the mainstream. This strategy has little impact on prices as cotton costs have been stable in the past few months.
  • Organic & functional textiles: For some upscale pants, makers blend cotton with 20 percent bamboo charcoal or rayon. A number of models adopt 50 percent linen or rayon. These materials increase comfort and breathability.
  • Casual styles: Considering that children grow at a fast pace, loose designs dominate output. Releases often come with elastic tape or drawstring waistbands, multiple pockets and roll-up bottoms. Zipper closures are optional.
