Makers of children's swimwear improve features, appearance

Children's swimsuit companies are adopting functional textiles and contrasting aesthetic elements.

China suppliers of children’s swimwear are strengthening R&D initiatives to boost product performance and visual appeal.

Bikini set
Dongyang Zhuolin Fushi's bikini set consists of a halter top and boy shorts. It is made of 80:20 nylon-spandex.

Manufacturers are adopting functional materials, with many preferring those that have UPF ratings from 10 to 50. Silver Summit Corp. Ltd utilizes textiles that are quick-dry and water-repellent, and even employs jasmine-scented versions.

In addition, the company is switching to pure polyester. Compared with conventional nylon, the input is less elastic but boasts better ink compatibility. This allows for more vibrant prints, some of which yield a 3D effect.

Regardless of material choice, children’s swimsuits with allover floral and polka-dot patterns are popular. Releases that have animal and cartoon character motifs are available as well.

Other models combine different fabrics in one design. For instance, a product can use a solid-colored textile for the top and a printed piece for the bottom. Similarly, companies offer garments in contrasting shades, often tweaking construction to accentuate the varied hues. Bright pink, red, orange, yellow, blue and green are mainstream.

Ruffles are widely adopted as trimming. Children's swimwear incorporates two or four layers along the armholes, bodice, leg openings or shoulder straps. Rhinestones and beads are also utilized.

Elastic bands may be fitted on the waist and chest of both girl’s and boy’s models. The typical closures are buckles, zippers and drawstrings.

To ensure product safety, the length of bands and butterfly knots are kept short to avoid strangulation. Pull tests are also done on buckles and buttons.

Colorfastness to sunlight and moisture is checked. Garments are examined for azo and heavy metal content, leftover needle fragments and compliance with the Oeko-Tex Standard 100.

Range of children's swimwear

Children’s swimwear from China is available in a range of styles, including rashguards, bodysuits, maillots, tankinis, bikinis, and boy’s boardshorts and trunks.

The common material choices are 200gsm nylon and polyester combined with spandex. Several high-end garments employ Lycra blends. The fiber ratio is usually 80:20, 82:18 or 95:5.

Nylon-spandex is widely used for its better stretch recovery, which is a sign of durability. Meanwhile, polyester variants are favored for their fade-resistant quality.

The main price determinants are the materials and the construction.

Low-end children's swimwear are $1.50 to $2.50, and adopt nylon or polyester mixed with 5 to 20 percent spandex. The selection includes boy’s swim bottoms in simple styles. Some are printed and have UV protection.

Quoted at $3 to $5, midrange releases comprise maillots and two-piece suits such as tankinis and bikinis. Among the material options are 80:20 and 82:18 nylon-spandex, and 95:5 polyester-spandex. Many are treated for UV resistance.

Models between $5.50 and $12 are considered high-end. They are made of nylon or polyester combined with 5 to 10 percent Lycra. Functional fabrics are utilized, boasting a UPF rating of 50, and water-resistant, quick-dry, scented and soil-release properties.

Design complexity also influences prices. The workmanship required for children’s swimwear is generally more difficult than for other garments due to the fabrics’ increased elasticity and smoother surface. As such, labor costs are higher, averaging $500 monthly per worker.

To reduce spending and improve efficiency, Dongyang Zhuolin Fushi Co. Ltd is using automatic sewing and cutting machines, and production lines. It is also intensifying skills training for employees.

Rising material costs and the yuan appreciation affect values as well. Prices in the past quarter increased 5 percent due to these factors.
