User-friendly tire pressure gauges top R&D targets

Digital releases can carry out multiple functions. Mechanical types are more portable.

China suppliers of tire pressure gauges are moving their sales mix toward high-value models to reduce vulnerability to rising raw material costs and price competition. Through this, they hope to boost profitability, which has been severely affected by the 30 percent increase in production outlay last year.

China suppliers of tire pressure gauges are moving their sales mix toward high-value models to reduce vulnerability to rising raw material costs and price competition. Through this, they hope to boost profitability, which has been severely affected by the 30 percent increase in production outlay last year.

In the digital sector, the shift upmarket is reflected in the introduction of more multifunction designs. Such models can provide readings in different scales, usually psi, bar, kgf/sqcm and kPa. In addition, these are fitted with several tools that aid navigation or are essential during accidents or road emergencies.

Zhejiang ZEC Group DIYTools Dept, for instance, has incorporated a tread depth gauge, bleeder valve, hammer, seatbelt cutter, compass and LED flashlight in its DTG-111 model. Priced 50 percent higher than units with three or four add-ons, the product has a measuring range of 0 to 200psi, 0 to 14 bar, 0 to 14 kgf/sqcm and 0 to 1,400kPa.

ZZW Precision Tool Supply (Shanghai) Co. Ltd has also launched a multiscale device with similar add-ons. The company’s D310-0818 model can measure pressure within 100psi, while the built-in tread depth gauge has a range of 0 to 20mm or 0.8in.

For further differentiation, makers are enhancing ergonomics. A number of recent releases have streamlined housings that are easier to handle.

In the mechanical line, R&D efforts are geared toward compact designs capable of measuring a wide range of pressure accurately.

Rising Instrument Co. Ltd, for example, has launched a device with a 1.5in dial. At least 25 percent smaller than the company’s previous instruments, the 15SBR60R model can provide readings of up to 160psi.

This and other designs from the enterprise have accuracy ratings that meet ANSI B40.1 grade B or EN 837-1 class 1.6. Units feature solid brass precision movement with a bronze bourdon tube.

Mechanical & digital gauges

China manufactures about 30 million tire pressure gauges yearly, up to 50 percent of which is sent abroad. Mechanical models account for 70 percent of output. In terms of exports, digital units constitute half.

Designs typically have a measuring range of 0 to 200psi, 0.05 to 9.95 bar, 0.05 to 9.95kgf/sqcm or 25 to 995kPa. Most are capable of presenting readings in at least two scales.

Reading resolutions of 0.1 and 0.5psi, bar, and kgf/sqcm are popular. In kilopascals, graduations of 1 or 5kPa are the standard options.

In the mechanical segment, the selection consists mainly of pencil and dial types. Prices start at $0.20 and increase depending primarily on the materials adopted.

Upwards to $2 are pencil designs with a measuring range of 10 to 50, 100 or 150psi. Models have brass bodies and plastic or zinc alloy heads. Their 2 or 4-sided indicator bars are in plastic or metal.

Dial tire pressure gauges below $1 have plastic bodies and acrylic windows. Versions reaching $4 adopt steel or zinc alloy cases and rings, and some come with flexible hoses and rubber gauge protectors. Chrome plating on metal parts is also common.

In higher-priced designs, LED backlights and flashlights are sometimes incorporated. These add-ons are powered by button cells.

Digital models, meanwhile, range from $2 to $11 per unit. Their housings are in ABS or aluminum alloy, while the chipsets are typically from domestic or Taiwan-based suppliers.

Measurements are shown on a backlit LCD screen. Most models run on two 1.5V AAA batteries or one 3.5V button cell.

Units between $3 and $4.90 are fitted with two to four functions. More expensive types come with at least five add-ons.

Tire pressure gauges can be sourced from about 150 companies in China. Most suppliers offer the line together with other automotive tools or measuring instruments.

Private small and midsize businesses constitute the majority of the industry. These enterprises usually operate in Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces.
