Suppliers are rolling out more models with auto-disable mechanisms. A few are adopting gamma ray sterilization.

• Safety: Responding to calls for greater safety, suppliers are increasing production of disposable hypodermic syringes fitted with mechanisms that prevent reuse. Many are releasing auto-disable types wherein the plunger locks automatically after use and is designed to snap if retracted forcefully. A few manufacturers are also rolling out designs where the needle retracts into the barrel, making the syringes easier to handle and dispose.
• Hygiene: To ensure the cleanliness of their products, some companies have upgraded from epoxy ethylene oxide to gamma ray sterilization. At these enterprises, the latter is adopted for upscale designs made of high-grade PP, which can withstand the irradiation better than low-end variants.
• Automatic production lines: Several makers are adopting automatic systems for assembly and packaging to facilitate production and reduce defect rates.
• Price forecast: Quotes of hypodermic syringes increased 2 to 5 percent in 2H11 due primarily to the appreciation of the yuan. Most suppliers estimate prices will continue to go up at this pace in the months ahead.
