Step 1: All importing begins with product. Identify the product you are interested in and go straight to the manufacturer to receive a quote on the quantity you desire. The easiest way to do this is with a comprehensive, search of manufacturers on the Global Sources website www.globalsources.com. Step 2: After searching manufacturers for your desired product, send an inquiry to the manufacturer through Global Sources. Contacting Global Sources' verified suppliers is a free service to the buyer! Be sure your inquiry includes detailed product specifications and the quantity you would like to import.

Step 3: Upon receiving your inquiry, manufacturers will contact you directly. Based upon suppliers' responses to your inquiry, select a few potential suppliers and request a product sample. Be sure to discuss price, shipping, and payment terms during this stage.

Step 4: After receiving the samples, select a supplier you would like to work with based on product quality, price, and proposed payment terms.

Step 5: Contact your local international trade association and customs office to help you select a customs house broker and freight forwarder. For the first time importer, use more individualized services, since you will need more attention than you expect. Ask the customs house broker and freight forwarder for a detailed break-down on the costs and regulations for importing these goods into your country.

Step 6: Do your homework on compliance issues. You must understand the relevant import compliance regulations beforehand. Step 10: Track your shipment and customs clearance. Your forwarder and customs broker will take care of the logistics for transportation and customs clearance; however you may be called on for additional information.
