China’s bicycle industry is taking
several steps to prop up sales and
sustain financial viability in the
months ahead. Since Global Sources
last covered the sector in October
2008, overseas demand weakened at
a faster pace, as reflected by export
volume declining at double-digit rates
during November and December. This
culminated in a total drop of 4 percent
for the year 2008.
Aggregate sales, however, rose 18
percent to $2.6 billion, primarily as a
result of higher prices. The growth also
reflected a better sales mix, with more
midrange and upscale units estimated
to have been shipped overseas.

China accounts for about 35 percent
of the global supply of surveillance
cameras, and 40 percent of the
worldwide DVR market. As production
and export volumes rise to match
the strong demand, makers expect
the country to remain a major
manufacturing base for CCTV cameras
and systems.
The output of China-made cameras
alone is projected to increase to 23
million units in 2009. Production of
DVRs will climb by about 20 percent
to 1.5 million. Rising demand for
24hr surveillance will boost the
infrared day/night camera line, which
is currently dominating the CCTV
camera segment. The output reached
about 10 million units in 2008, nearly
half of the total supply of CCTV
cameras. It is expected to continue
expanding as suppliers release other
types, including standard box, dome,
speed dome, pan-tilt-zoom or PTZ and
IP models. |

Kitchenware suppliers in China are
taking a number of steps to keep
export sales afl oat amid the economic
slowdown affecting key markets. In
fact, some makers anticipate their
overseas revenue to increase by up to
10 percent in 2009 despite the crisis.
To stimulate demand, these
companies are reducing minimum
order requirements and expanding
design selections. They are also
reaching out to alternative markets
such as Asia, South America and the
Middle East in hopes of propping up
revenue.
In an effort to draw buyer interest
further, a growing number of makers
are emphasizing aesthetics, mostly
in the color and shape choices for
cookware, bakeware and kitchen
utensils. |

Kitchen appliance suppliers in China
are optimistic that overseas sales will
recover in 2009 despite the economic
recession that has put extreme pressure
on the industry. In fact, suppliers that
survived the first wave of factory
closures in the fourth quarter of 2008
are already seeing opportunities amid
the crisis.
With many small makers squeezed
out of the line, those that remain have
started competing on quality, not just
price. And this trend will become more
noticeable in coming months as more
suppliers are expected to succumb to
the economic crunch.
The industry shakeout is also giving
midsize and large companies favorable
timing to move upmarket and with it
the opportunity to seize orders from
major global buyers. |
